Arterium Corporation opens museum

The museum exhibition presenting the history of the pharmaceutical plant Galychpharm was opened on the 9th of October in Lviv. The exhibition is presented at the manufacturing site at 6/8 Opryshkivska Street/

Among the exhibit items is the glassware with unique paper labels made more than one hundred and fifty years ago. The glassware was used ina Lviv pharmacyPid Zolotoyu Zirkoyu(Under the Golden Star) at Shyroka Street (renamed Copernic Street). It is this pharmacy that gave birth to the company subsequently grown into Galychpharm Pharmaceutical Plant. Museum visitors will also see glassware with specialized quality labels used by pharmacists in the 19th century, Austrian pharmaceutical balance dating back to 1880s. The company was born in 1911 when the pharmaceutical plant Laokoon was built at Furgalskogo St. (renamed Opryshkivska St.). The Plant started commercial production of drugs based on traditional technologies. In late 1930s, the plant was nationalized and subsequently reorganized into Lviv Chemical and Pharmaceutical Plant. In 1966, the company started to export its products.

Exhibits representing the history of the industrially developed company in the 20th century include tablets Od bolu glowy [headache pills] manufactured by Galychpharm in 1970s – 1990s for Poland. During the Soviet times, Lviv was tasked to develop an analogue for Od bolu glowy tablets produced by Polfa, a Polish pharmaceutical company. These headache pills were very popular among the Poles who used to take them as their first-choice headache pills. These pills were sold by pharmacies and small kiosks such as news-stands. The Poles used to call these headache pills “Od bolu glowy z kogutkiem” [headache pills with a cockerel; Kogucik means a cockerel, Polish] because of a small red cockerel on the label. The company redeveloped the composition of these pills, launched commercial production and used a red cross instead of a red cockerel. Later, these pills were popularly called “Od bólu głowy z krzyżykiem” (headache pills with a cross; Krzyżyk means a cross, Polish]. The Company produced 200 to 230 million packs per year at that time. The drug has been produced until early 1990s.

It took more than a year for the corporate team to collect unique exhibits describing the history of Galychpharm. Over more than a hundred-year history, the Plant changed its names, legal forms and owners, exported products for patients in the Eastern Europe but remained one of the major employers for the city.

The museum rooms are well-equipped with up-to-date technical facilities and may be used to hold lectures for university students, workers and visitors. The Galychpharm Museum is open for everybody.
